tj_dragon: Week 2 - Spiderman

Hello all,

We're getting back into the swing of things and exams are looming large. But don't worry cos Sci-fi soc are here to take your mind off things.

This week we're going to go see new-release Spider 3.
We'll be watching the 8pm showing at the AMC cinema in Fiveways. The train leaves University station at 7:25 and we should arrive at the cinema soon after 7:30, leaving plenty of time to get money and buy snacks.

Lunchtimes are a little different this week. Due to room booking issues we have the Rosa Parkes room 2-3pm, instead of 1-2. I suggest we meet downstairs in Joes from 1pm and then we can amble upstairs after 2 so people can use the library.
Friday lunchtime is from 1pm onwards in Rosa Parkes, I have to say I'd appreciate a few more people showing up this week.

I've just ordered 12 new books for the society library which will be arriving in the next week. So if you'd like some relief from revision come and see what the library has to offer.

Have fun,

Cathy

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a good holiday and aren't too stressed about exams, don't worry it'll all be over soon. :)

Despite the unusual structure of the 3rd semester Sci-fi will still be running socials and events for you.
This week we're in the Green Room from 7pm and are watching DVDs. A selection of films will be available, feel free to bring your own, and people can vote on what we watch.

Lunchtime socials are Wednesdays and Fridays from 1pm in Rosa Parkes (formerly CR5). Come along, relax and forget about exams and revision for a while.
Events this term are fairly fluid but we will be having DVD nights, cinema trips, and meeting in the pub. On Wed 13th June we're having our annual summer BBQ, free food in the sunshine, more details later.

Shaz (Chair-elect) has challenged CVG soc to a gaming tournament. We need a team of 4 or 5 who're available to play in the week beginning 11th June. Anyone who's good at multiplayer games (especially super smash bros, bomberman, worms, pro evo or street fighter) come and battle for the pride of the society. If you're interested please contact Shaz in the the next week.

Have fun,

Cathy

tj_dragon: Week 11 - TMNT

Hello everyone,

For the last week of term we're going to see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. I am reliably informed that it is a very good film and will no doubt be something of a nostalgia fest for many.

We're going to the 8:45 showing at the AMC cinema in Five Ways. We'll meet at University station by 8:10 and should get to the cinema by 8:30. The film is about 1hr 30mins so theres plenty of time to catch the bus/train home afterwards.

Before the cinema trip a group of us are meeting in the Mandela room from 7pm to talk about what's happening next term. Due to exams and revision the 3rd semester tends to be fairly informal, we run all the same meetings where people can come and relax. We'll probably be showing various DVDs on Wednesday nights. If you have any ideas about what we should show please contact me or come along.

Lunchtime socials are 1-2pm in CR5 on both Wednesday and Friday.
Could people with library books outstanding (including Greg) please bring them to these meetings or take the to the basement counter in the Guild.

Results of the AGM can be found here: http://z11.invisionfree.com/Citadel_of_Davegotsu/index.php?showtopic=70&st=0#entry4236736

Have Fun and Good Luck with revision,

Cathy

Hello All,

This week is our AGM and end of term party. Come and vote in the new committee, then listen to music and/or play games because the semester is almost over.
We're in the Mandela Room from 7pm, the AGM should get started by 7:30.
There's still time to nominate yourself for a position, in fact nominations don't close until just before the vote. There are plenty of positions, some are serious and others are just for fun. So come along if you want to get involved.
Remember every member can vote and this is your chance to have your say in who runs the society over the next year.
Details of committee positions and absentee voting are here:
http://z11.invisionfree.com/Citadel_of_Davegotsu/index.php?showtopic=50
And nominations so far are here:
http://z11.invisionfree.com/Citadel_of_Davegotsu/index.php?showtopic=58

Lunchtime socials: on Wednesday we're in the Green room and Friday we're back to CR5, 1-2pm as always.

Could people with library books please bring them back. We'll take them at any society meeting, or you can hand them in at the Basement counter.
I'll be buying new books in the next week and it'd be nice to know how much space there is.

Have fun,

Cathy

tj_dragon: Laser Tag

Hello,

For the last week of term I'm planning a laser tag trip.
Before I can book I'll need people to tell if they want to come.
It'll be 28th March in the evening, probably meeting at the Guild around 7pm.
Games cost £4 per person and are 20 mins long, so we'll probably want 2. The society will subsidise at least part of the cost of the games so it'll definitely be under £8.

We'll be going to Quasar Elite on Westley Road in Acocks Green, this is on the no. 11 bus route. Buses cost £1.40 per journey, so transport costs £2.80.

If you are interested in coming please let me know before Thursday. I need to book as soon as possible.

If there isn't enough interest/response we'll hold a normal event in the Guild.

Please get back to me,

Cathy

tj_dragon: Week 9 - Quiz

Hello

This weeks event is our annual Quiz which was postponed last term. The Quiz is being hosted by Dave who has kindly volunteered to run it for the last few years.
The Quiz is a fun and friendly, and it doesn't matter if your knowledge of SF & Fantasy is limited. There will be fun rounds as well as trivia. Prizes are available for the winners and losers.
The Quiz starts at 7:30 in the Mandela Room on Wednesday.

Lunchtime socials are both in CR5 this week, 1-2pm Wednesday and Friday. Please return library books during these meetings, we will need them back by the end of term.

Our AGM is next week, please use this opportunity to vote.
Details of committee positions, and how to vote if you can't be there are here: http://z11.invisionfree.com/Citadel_of_Davegotsu/index.php?showtopic=50&st=0&#entry4054270

If you want to nominate yourself or someone else for a position let me know.
The list of nominations is here: http://z11.invisionfree.com/Citadel_of_Davegotsu/index.php?showtopic=58
If you want to nominate someone else for a position (besides Honorary President) I will need their permission before I post their name.

Have fun,

Cathy

Hey everybody,

This week we're heading to the cinema to see new Marvel movie Ghost Rider.

We'll be going to the 7pm screening at Cineworld, this means we have to catch the train at University around 6:30pm, so people might want to grab dinner early.
I know it's early but cinemas seem to have some problem with showing things at 8pm and so either we head out early or miss the train back. This way there'll be plenty of time afterwards to get back to campus, and we may even have time to get a drink in.

Lunchtime socials are as normal, 1-2pm CR5 Wednesday and Friday. If you've had library books out for a while please bring them back to one of these meetings.

In 2 weeks (Wed 21st March) it's our AGM and End of Term Party.
We'll be holding elections for the new committee. If you'd like to run for a committee position please do, there are plenty that look good on CVs and others which require very little actual work. All members can vote, and this is the one chance you have to pick who will be running the society next term.
Details of the committee positions and how to vote if you can't be there are in the previous post and on the society forum.
Please use this chance to participate in the society. It's an election without politics, which is a rare thing.

I have been told that Richard Charlton will be having most - if not all - of his hair removed tomorrow at 4pm for charity. Not sure where exactly, but ask Pete for details.

There is a Red Dwarf Night on Fri 9th March in the Thompson Training Suite. Starting at 6:30pm it's only £1.50 for 4.5 hours of Red Dwarf.

Have fun,

Cathy

tj_dragon: AGM and Committee Positions

The Committee

The Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Publicity Officer make up the Top 4 committee positions. These officers are officially signed over every year so that they can deal with the Guild. The other committee positions are internal, so the Librarians, Fantasy Representative, Drunken Master and Honorary President can work within the society but are not officially recognised as committee members by the Guild.

Chair
The Chair is in charge of the society and has to make sure that the important stuff gets done. Tasks can be delegated to other committee members and so the workload is flexible. The main things the Chair needs to oversee are committee meetings, Freshers fair and room bookings. The Chair can take on or delegate other responsibilities depending upon the committee dynamic.

Secretary
According to the constitution the Secretary is in charge of communication. This means making sure that members are receiving information. This is done through the mailing list, LJ community, forum and website. Some of these can be delegated to the Webmaster (Dave). The Secretary is also supposed to take minutes at committee meetings. However committee meetings tend to become a series of digressions, and so even if the minutes did exist they probably wouldn’t make a lot of sense. The Secretary can also take on other administrative tasks.

Treasurer
The Treasurer is the only one allowed to embezzle money from the society. Although two committee signatures are required on all finance forms and so they’d probably need an accomplice. Anyway, the society is not very financially active so the Treasurer just needs to keep an eye on the current account and make sure the grant forms are filled and the resultant money is spent.

Publicity Officer
This is a fairly new position and hasn’t been fully defined yet. Basically the Publicity Officer is in charge of getting the word out to the wider community. This mostly involves Freshers publicity, but can include any other events that committee or society want to publicise.

Librarian (x2)
The Librarians are keepers of the library keys and must make sure the library runs smoothly. This includes opening and closing the library, making sure people know how to take and return books, and reminding people to actually return their books. We tend to lose a few books each year and the Librarians’ job is to make sure that losses are avoided.

Fantasy Representative
Given the nature of our events and the current media trends we might manage to overlook the Fantasy side of the genre in favour of Science Fiction. When they feel that there has been too much focus on aliens and spaceships, and not enough on dragons and magic, the Fantasy Representative must tell the Chair to hold a fantasy based event. The Chair doesn’t actually have to do this, but it’d be nice if they did.

Drunken Master
This position has been vacant for the past year, however every group needs a comic drunk to entertain them and the Drunken Master is ours. This is the only position with an entry requirement instead of a vote; candidates must be timed drinking a pint of alcoholic liquid. The fastest drinker gets the position.

Honorary President
This position is designed to honour those who have made a contribution to the society or the genre, and those who can act as our role model in the year ahead. If the Honorary President comes to a meeting the society is obliged to buy her/him/it a drink. The position cannot be held by a member, but other than that there is no limit on who can be nominated. Our current Honorary President is Chuck Norris; previous incumbents include The Mighty Thor and Cthulhu.

The AGM

The AGM is Wednesday 21st March in the Mandela room and will start at 7:30pm.
All society members can vote, regardless of their status within the Guild or University.
Nominations can be accepted on the night, but if you know in advance that you want to run for a position it's best to tell me so you can benefit from absentee ballots.

If anyone can't make it to the meeting they can submit an absentee ballot.
ALL absentee ballots MUST be in writing and must reach the Chair before the AGM starts. Absent voters must put their name and signature on paper and write down which person they vote for in which position. These ballots can be given to any committee member and will be kept secure by the Chair and destroyed once the AGM is over.

Even if a position is uncontested it is not definite that the candidate will win because we always run R.O.N. (Re-Open Nominations). So don't feel that voting is unnecessary even if there is only one candidate running for a position.

Remember this is your chance to have your say about your committee.
Hope I see you there.

tj_dragon: Week 7 - Robin of Sherwood

Hello everyone,

For this week's event we'll be watching Robin of Sherwood.
Don't worry it isn't the current BBC version. Robin of Sherwood was produced in the 80s and is arguably a definitive version of the Robin Hood legend, which has influenced later film and television portrayals of England's favourite folk hero.

We're in Mandela from 7pm and will start at 7:30. Apparently some ex-boybander is coming to the Guild that night too and so everyone has to be in by 8pm or they'll start charging admission to get into the building.

Lunchtime Socials are as usual in CR5. On Wednesday we'll have information about the elcetions and all the candidates. So if you don't know who's who, what's what, or even that there was an election come along and we'll explain it as easily as possible.

On Friday 9th March some Rock soc people are holding a Red Dwarf night 6:30-11pm in Thompson Training Suite (other side of CR5) only £1.50.

Have fun,

Cathy
